More rain and low cloud. We set off west across the mountains to the coast at Haast. This is the main road across the island to the bottom part of the west coast road but it was very quiet. We stop briefly in Haast village (pop 190) whose residents the Lonely Planet wittily names Haastafarians. The weather is wet so we follow the dead end coast road south through some pretty dead end coastal villages. The road is very bumpy. It is surprising how far a tub of hummus can spread itself around a campervan fridge.
40km later at the end of the road, we turn round and head north again through lush but very quiet scenery in the rain to Fox village. We check into an excellent and reasonable campground (everything else in Fox seems to be priced at 50% more than elsewhere) and the rain continues heavily all evening and night.
