On arrival at Aukland Airport, both sets of hiking boots pass biosecurity exanimation with no excess contamination by Australia.


The first thing that we notice when we emerge from the terminal is that the air is clean and fresh. There is a definite chill in the wind. We have been too hot for too long. The sun is shining and the sky is blue. We set off in our new hire car, a Toyota Corolla, which is a bit bigger than the car we drove in Australia.


We head away from Aukland as we will spend some time there later in th trip. After 100km approx, we check into a motel just outsideThames at the bottom of the Coromandel Peninsula.


The room is a sort of studio at the top of an A frame buikding with a kitchenette and comfortable chairs. We go to the local supermarket to buy supplies for breakfast. We arrive at 1955 to find that it closes at 2000 so we shop supermarket sweep-style.
