Day 19
Head em up and head em out. That's cowboy lingo for we are on the road again. We made a "thrilling" stop at the 4 corners. I stood in Utah; Dirinda in Colorado and Jan was in New Mexico. That cost us $3.00 a head to get in. Been there done that now, don't need to do it again. We then headed south to Canyon De Chelly (De Shay). We arrived about 11:00 AM and began prowelling the canyon rim and outlooks. Canyon De Chelly is currently inhabitted by Navajo Indians. They are working fields in the broad canyon floor. The ruins here were quite disapointing. The canyon itself is quite beautiful with deep red cliffs and rock formations, green canyon floor and blue sky. This one is not a do over. If it is on your way to somewhere it is a good stop. If you have to go out of you way and cut your trip time, move on. There is only one trail you can take on your own. The rest you must have a Navajo guide in and out. A Jeep tour is $150 for three people but you need to buy tickets in advance. The quality of the ruins we could see didn't seem worth it.
We have decided that after seeing all of the Ancestral Puebloan, (Used to be Anasazi), ruins we have encountered our favorite was Bandelier, followed by Hovenweep, Mesa Verde and Sunset Crater. Tonight we ran into some booking problems for a room but we were successful and are staying in a Holiday Inn. We are right outside of the park and the Best Western is on the other side of town with not much in between. Canyon DeChelly is about all that is happening in Chinle, AZ. Tomorrow it is on to Navajo Momument Valley and the night in Page, AZ. Shawn, Dirinda, Jan More thumbnails ...
