Day 9

Hi all,
To day was a thrill. We rose early, 5:30 ate breakfast and headed for Grand Canyon West. We called last night to try for bus reservations but there were none. So we drove ourselves to the Reservation. It included 14 miles of rough dirt road. We have named Dirinda's car the Highlander Lassie. Lassie handled the road just fine. We arrived before the masses to come in later. The entry fee was $46 and it included the bus shuttle to the viewing points of Eagle Point with the sky bridge and Guano Point, A meal at Guano Point and a souvenir post card and certificate. To walk the bridge costs an additional $25. WORTH EVERY PENNY!! Dirinda and I did it! Jan stayed behind and held purses, cameras and water bottles.
I have to admit stepping out onto clear glass looking down 2000 feet does cause one's stomach to lurch just a bit. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take camera, bags or anything loose with you. The first few days it was open many cameras, hats and eye glasses went over the side. We then re boarded the coach, which comes by every 15 minutes, and headed for Guano Point. It seems there is a bat cave across the canyon that contained a very active bat colony which in turn produced a lot of bat guano (that is bat poop for those not fluent in Spanish). It seems that it was used for many things back in the 40's and early 50's including being an ingredient for lipstick and eye liner. Make you shiver huh.
We had a very nice lunch of BBQ beef and chicken, coleslaw, cornbread, corn on the cob and cake for dessert. Now it was time to face the 14 miles of dirt road to get back to Kingman. Tomorrow we are off the the main Grand Canyon Park facility. More thumbnails ...

Hello gals (reply) May 1, 2007 23:48 EST by nurse
Thanks for the great photos and information about your trip. I have enjoyed all of them. The Skywalk is something I have read about and wondered how it would feel to be out that far from the edge looking down. Have fun and be safe. Jean
