The rotunda has lots of marble with a view up into the dome. The engraved quotes are a mixture of business, positive thoughts, and biblical. But it’s most outstanding feature is its artwork. Throughout the building are lunettes which are paintings within arches like half moons, thus the name lunette
But the most outstanding part was the murals by Thomas Hart Benton (the painter). The walls of the House Lounge are covered with a mural of A Social History of Missouri. The murals are fantastic. The pigments are mixed with either egg yolks or egg whites. They were extremely controversial in 1934 when Benton painted them because he included such things as selling liquor to Indians for pelts, slavery, tarring and feathering a Mormon during the expulsion of Mormons from Missouri, the outlaw Jesse James, and the political boss Tom Pendergast. Benton’s response was, "For the full story, you have to take the good with the bad." Here is a link to more information and video of the room. http://benton.truman.edu/index.html.
What wonderful artwork and building!
