Where I stayed
I made it to Zurich and it was late in the evening. I checked into my really overpriced private room hostel and set out for some dinner. The place seems to be like Singapore. I even remember reading a comparision to the city-state. I think it is right on. The place is just a bunch of outdoor restaurants and high-end stores with a river running down the middle. There really isn't much to see for the average tourist unless you want to shop till you drop. With my rapidly depleting funds, shopping isn't an option. But the evening was filled with a butt-load of people on the streets and partying pretty hard. There were about 3 sets of professional-grade fireworks shows going off all around the city at the same time. Apparently it was their Independance day and it fell on a Saturday. So that meant lots of partying. I was really surprised on how many fireworks were going off around the city. While I was getting an evening vanilla shake, I saw some stooge shooting pretty big fireworks straight into a building with no remorse. I thought the city was going to burn because there were a ton of fireworks going off everywhere. The fireworks were supposed to be over by 11pm but I saw some fireworks from my window going off right over the river in the middle of the city. These weren't ordinary fireworks either
My first full day wasn't too eventful. I pretty much walked around for a while bored out of my mind. I've come to the point of saturation with sub-par museums and churches. If it isn't cream of the crop, why bother? After awhile, they all start to blend in. Since it was a Sunday, everything was closed. The city's #1 tourist attraction is a "A beautiful shopping street" which I walked in the pouring down rain. To tell you the truth it didn't appeal to me as I didn't want to buy anything and if I did, it was all closed. It seemed the whole city was shut-down. Not because it was post Independance day, but because I guess they really use their Sunday's to relax. I did use the day to plan out my next 2 weeks of traveling. Which allows me to buy a few tickets in advance instead the day prior of day of.
Bottom Line: Zurich Sucks instead you want to spend money. PASS
