Where I stayed

I made it to Amsterdam crazy tired and late into the night. So far I have taken a free tour around the city where I learned quite a bit about the city.  Also toured the Red Light District which wasn't that big a deal for me.  Rode a boat on the canal, rode bikes through the city out into the country to a windmill that people live in.  Today I will tour the Heineken beer factory and tomorrow will be the Van Gogh and Rembrandt museums.

About Amsterdam:  I didn't really know what to expect of the city because to tell you the truth, I really didn't think too much into it.  I know that people smoke a lot of pot and can buy sex legally. And those things are very true but there is a lot more to the city than just that. Marijuana is actually ILLEGAL here but the city/cops turn a blind eye to it because they think it is a health problem vice a criminal one. You walk past "coffee shops" and you will smell weed. You walk past "cafes" and you will smell coffee.  It's not really a big deal here. As for the Red Light District, it will be shut down in 2015 as my tour guide said. There are actually apts/condos that live right above all of this stuff. There is a kindergarten right next to some red light windows.  Again, not really a big deal here. As for the people, there a lot of foreigners here so tourism is really big. I haven't met a local who doesn't speak English well.  And the Dutch people overall are good looking people who love to ride bikes.  Bikes are EVERYWHERE here. When you cross the street you have to look for 4 different things; bikes, scooters, cars, and the tram. There are 4 different lanes you have to cross just to make it out alive.

Update: I went to the Heineken beer factory/museum yesterday and it was decent. Then I went to the Van Gogh museum which was really awesome.  It was really neat to see all the art you've seen as a kid in person.  Before I went to the museum I was wondering what made him so great.  Seeing his work made me really appreciate his art.  Next I went to the somewhat Rembrandt museum and wasn't very impressed.  Being that I'm not very good in the arts, I wasn't sure what to expect. There wasn't too much art of his and it was all religious work and dudes in armor.  With his famous work called "Night Watch" which ceased to make an impression on me.  Oh well!

Bottom line: Easy for US Tourist: Very
                   Fun Factor: High
Security: I felt safe walking around late at night.
THUMBS UP! Amsterdam is pretty cool but time to move on.
