Show trip route
My personal Christmas season really started on Saturday. Jackie and I got up fairly early and walked down through the nice cold morning air to get student rush tickets for the Boston Ballet's performance of The Nutcracker. I haven't seen the show since I was little, but I still listen to (and love) the score, so I was very excited to see it again.
The play was awesome - and it was so adorable seeing all the little girls and their mothers and aunts dressed in velvet dresses. (We had been seeing them around the city all morning, and here they all were in one place!) As fun as it is to see The Nutcracker as a kid, something has to be said for going back and seeing it as a young adult. I noticed more, felt more, appreciated more, while all the time remembering my own childhood as a crushed-red-velvet-and-Mary-Jane-wearing aspiring ballerina. The music and the dance really is wonderful.
After that, we had a few hours to ourselves before it was time for our school-sponsored Yule Ball. There was a Harry Potter themed dinner in our dining hall - house stickers for us; witch hats everywhere; candles hanging from the lights, snitches from the ceilings; "Magic Soup" and vegetarian "Butterbeer" soup; small tables arranged into long, long, long tables; a full cake for each of the four houses (which were delicious ignoring the mile-high frosting), plus treacle tarts (terrible, to be honest), and pumpkin pasties (pretty good). A whole group of kids from my floor went together and sat at one table. It was very fun, except for the fact that I was positioned directly under a candle and hit my head on it whenever I stood up xD
The Yule Ball itself was decent. It was fun to have an occasion to be dressed up, the DJ was pretty good, they had extremely delicious "Cockroach Clusters" and "Pumpkin Pasties" and other Harry Potter treats, and it was nice to release all the stress of finals with my friends. We got there just after the start and were one of the first people there; when my floor went to get a photo taken at the photo booth, the lights had to be moved back to fit us all and there was literally no one left anywhere else in the room.
All in all, a fairly busy today.
