We all went to the same Youth Group. YG is like church for teenagers - music, games and a talk. We were in the same small group. You get together in the same group every week and talk about the message/question/debate/sermon/talk that was just given. So we spent a few years together, every wednesday night, debating about Jesus, God, Church, and all things Christian.
Our youth group met on the North Shore of Vancouver. The North Shore is made up of two municipalities: North Van and West Van. Nicole, Suzi and I and two other friends, Lin and Trish, all went to West Van High. What this meant is that we were hated by North Van for being "rich kids". West Van is a bubble of money, fast cars and snobbery. In fact, most normal people from west van don't find it something to brag about. It's a shame really, such beauty inhabited by such annoying people.
So at Youth Group we got called the rich kids. Funny thing is, none of us were "rich" at all. Suzi and Lin didn't even live in west van. I parked my beater cabriolet convertible (which i bought with my own money) inbetween beamers and bmw's and porsches every morning at school. We were not the rich kids.
At school we met up to do bible study once a week. We weren't allowed to call it Bible Study and we weren't allowed to advertise it in any way. it got around by word of mouth and over the years, we created a core group of christians/catholics at West Van high. there were probably about 20 of us in a school of 1500 (probably something to do with that parable Jesus told about a camel getting thru the eye of a needle before a rich man enters heaven). The 5 of us, especailly, formed a really tight group of friends.
we roamed the hallways singing 5 part harmonies of "Lean on Me" (our song) and "Amen, Hallelujah". we encouraged and prayed for each other. We had Jesus. We had each other.
So one day, we decided to call ourselves Team Money. Because we decided we were probably the richest people in that damn school. So the last year we had together, we made Team Money shirts. At youth group, whenever one of us got onstage to sing or talk, we hooted and hollered from the back "Money! Money! Money! Oy! Oy! Oy!".
since then Lin and Trish got married. their husbands have shirts that read "Married into Money". Trish is trying to get pregnant. The baby will get a shirt that reads 'Made of Money".
So, like i said, it was great to have nicole join me and suzi. The more Money, the better.
