"Berlin ist arm, aber sexy." ("Berlin is poor, but sexy.")
(Klaus Wowereit, Governing Mayor)
Day one exploring Berlin went well. 2 min Shuttle Bus ride to the tram. 15 min tram ride to the train station. And then a 20 min train ride to Berlin. Sounds messy but it wasn't that bad – quite easy the public transport system. One ticket does all. We started Berlin at the Brandenburger Tor – another 'free’ tour guide. There were about 150 people waiting to do the free tour. They spilt the groups up to smaller groups (thank god – imagine one tour guide with 150 ppl following!). Our tour guides name was George. In his 20s from the states and man was he energetic and a laugh and a half. He took us through most of the main attractions in Berlin, told us some good stories, some tragic stories and some interesting history of Berlin
We then went to the LOXX – miniature train world. 3,000m2 showroom with lively scenes of Berlin...everything ranging from a firestation, farming, concerts, airport with planes landing and taking off. They have day scenes and even night time scenes. Ladies and Gentlemen, I welcome you to nerd central! This would have to be the biggest and by far the greatest model railway exhibition in the planet. Trav was in his element...getting up nice and close to snap the perfect photo. It was pretty impressive even if you aren’t into this sort of stuff.
We then went to the Holocaust Memorial and Museum. The Holocaust Memorial was interesting. All these huge concrete slabs ranging at different heights representing the Jewish lives that were lost. The museum was free – this told of peoples real life stories and the things then went through and who they lost during this horrific era. Very sad.
We made it back to camp around 9:30pm...sore feet, sore legs...lots of walking done yet again today.
