What an amazing day we had today! It was full of blessings, new people, and lots of laughs. We once again started out the day at Camp Restore and volunteering and from there traveled to The Sheraton for the National Lutheran Youth Gathering (NYG). Along today's journey we met many new people and came to greater understand the heart some of the people of New Orleans truly have.

Once again this morning it was an early day. We were up at 6am and had breakfast at 7am. We then set out to work among homes. We were given the work of deconstruction of a home that was ruined by the flood waters of Katrina. In the area we worked in, the homes had around 7ft of water. The home had already been torn down by the city, but some of the wood was still good and is going to be used for indoor wall paneling, benches, bookshelves, and such so we had to go through each board, and using hammers and pliers, we took out all the nails. It was a day of long, hard work, but work that made a great difference and was a tremendous help. We worked with current residents of New Orleans; Simon, Kathy, and John; who were a great blessing to us. All three had lived in New Orleans when Katrina hit, and Kathy and John had to rebuild part of their homes. Simon was blessed and was living on higher ground so his house didn’t suffer. All three are very passionate about their city and as they talked about the ways God was working through Katrina, we couldn’t help but remember God’s promises that he gives us nothing more than we can handle and will always be with us. They helped us to remember that God is truly good, all the time.

After we returned from working we cleaned up and packed our things so that we could leave to go to The Sheraton. As we were driving through downtown New Orleans going to our hotel we were constantly passing youths that were either wearing this year’s lime green NYG backpacks, or standing in large groups. It is going to be an amazing experience to be with so many youth professing the same one and only God. When we arrived at The Sheraton, we learned that there were no double rooms available, so we left our things and went out for dinner. We found a small grill and bar that had a great variety of food (from pancakes to alligator). We were put in an indoor patio room with another group that was here for the NYG that was from Nashville, IL and our two groups had a great dinner as it was a time of small fellowship. Also, right before we were leaving the restaurant, we saw some people from First Lutheran Church in Inverness. We know some other people that will be down here, so we’re hoping to see lots of old faces this week!

After dinner we went and walked a little around downtown and then headed back to our hotel, as it turned out, we didn’t have our rooms-even though we should have-so we were given a suite, sweet! We quickly learned on our way up that it will be difficult getting up and down because the stairs are closed and elevators are the only transportation allowed, so we have now put elevator transportation into our list of delays. Tomorrow we will get some sleep in the morning and then spend some time by the pool. We’re going to have a nice dinner in mid-afternoon and then we’ll head over to The Dome for our first mass event with everyone here for the NYG to officially kick us off! Once again, thanks for all your support, prayers, and comments! God’s Blessings!

Love from All,

What an exciting, uplifting and profoundly spiritual evening and week you will have, sharing faith and fellowship with thousands of other Lutheran Christian Youth. Rejoice and embrace all your experiences. God will be in the midst of all of you, showing His love and the way He would have all of you go.

What a shame you had to take a suite instead of a regular room.
It sounds like you are all having a great time. You'll have a lot of neat memories from this week.

Bless you all. Judianne

Nashville, IL - just across the river from St. Louis! Maybe we'll see them in St. Louis. If not this year, then maybe in years to come. And Inverness youth - how special. I understand you are meeting Pastor Randy and some of his youth this morning - just know you are having a great time. Glad you are in communication with people from New Orleans so that you will have an even greater feel for their heart and love for their city and community. God be with you and bless you and keep you in His care!
