Today was the Rhayader lake routes. Apparently I've been here before many years ago, but I can't remember when. The first route was to take th B4518 through to Elan Village and then drive around the lakes. However as it was such a beautiful day I'd already decided to walk around the lakes instead.
Unfortunately I was slightly distracted by a preceding lake Llyn Clwbedor where you can drive over the dam. As you can see it is quite stunning. But not half as stunning as the "scenic route"! Yep, the normal route isn't scenic enough, so the Welsh built a new one and hats off to the designer because it works! One amusing moment when I thought I was lost made me giggle. I'd reached a t-junction and the signpost said:
Left: Llandiloes 9
Right: Llandiloes 9
I didn't take a photo as I had a car behind me, but if you get lost in the lakes, turn right. In fact this is a mantra I always use - if in doubt turn right as it will always be.
Digression aside, I continued along my favoured B-road until I went wrong and took the wrong road. No matter Elan village soon appeared and off I went for a walk along the lake. Fantastic place and it is now my favourite spot in Wales. For lunch I ate wild blackberries - I doubt any walk could top it. Unfortunately I didn't realise how far the dams would be and I'd neglected to take any water with me which curtailed the walk. I still had the drive of my life to look forward too.
The road along the lakes curls off into the mountains and apparently ends up in Aberystwyth. So I took it ... and about two hours later I was still on this road ... driving through the most incredible scenery ... and getting lower and lower on fuel. The trouble with driving a car live Lavern, you can't drive worrying about your consumption. This is like worrying about over eating when your on the coffee segment of your 5 course meal.
Ultimately I got home, but the important thing was that the best part of my journey was the unscripted section along the "Mountain road to Aberystwyth".
The evening meal was at the Victoria. Following the realisation that the restaurant side was the equivalent of the Marie Celeste, we ate in the bar. Same menu but instant service. I had a very nice Vegetable soup and two huge slabs of bread(Cow Shed take note) and followed it up with a bacon chop and chips. Very good value too.
The journey home was eventful in that in the space of a few seconds we saw a badger and a fox. This is the first live badger I've seen here and it stayed in sight for quite a while.
