I am currently on the train from Xi’an to Chengdu in the hard sleeper carriage –
66 berths in one enclosed space with the latest pop sensation ringing out of the
speakers and life going on as normal; slurping at noodles, hoiking & spitting,
smoking, sleeping & snoring and endlessly chattering.
We have been in China for a week now and it has been a relaxed time by Japanese
standards. Still, in the space of that week we have uploaded and posted our
first month’s worth of blog entries and photos, visited the Forbidden City,
Tienanmen Square and the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, been to the pearl market
and on a food odyssey in the hutongs, met up with my cricket skipper on a
desperate recruiting drive for next season, done all our Christmas shopping,
taken an overnight train to Xi’an, cycled around the city walls and visited the
truly phenomenal terracotta warriors. All pretty chilled out really.
