Without map, expectation or knowledge. A phenomenal Shinto shrine-compound set in sparkling forest. A huge complex in which we seemed to be the only privileged Westerners walking around a Wonderland of a religious temple. The whole complex is torn down &  rebuilt every 20 years - the last time in 1993 at a cost of US$ 6 billion.
And then the stop-in-the-tracks moment of the stall of the sacred horse. A throng of people gathered around what looked like another small shrine, taking flash photographs of a magnificent grey stallion boxed into a tight, dark enclosure looking startled and unsure of its adoration. I half expected when this wild beast turned its head to see a single spiralled horn protruding from its forehead.
