In my experience, the cliché of a Russian boarding a train, opening a bottle of
vodka and not stopping until his compartment is filled with empty bottles is a
rare occurrence. In actual fact the vast majority follow quite a set routine
which remains the same regardless of the duration of their journey and that does
not feature alcohol at all. First they change from whatever they happen tob e
wearing into the uniform of sports lounge wear. They then unfold their bedding.
They will then layout great quantities of food and eat a small proportion of it.
They will then get down to the important business of sleep. They will sleep for
95% of the remainder of their journey, stopping occasionally to consume more
food or shuffle briefly up and down the corridor. It is as if people in Russia
buy train tickets merely so they can catch up on a few Zzzzzs.
