Huge haze over Cairo as we landed...zoomed through immigration, got my luggage and found my ride holding a sign with my name on it! I followed him closely as he pushed my luggage cart down the center lane of traffic out to the parking lot. They aren't big on staying on sidewalks here that's for sure. Large white tents had been set up outside of the airport terminals to temporarily house all of the Muslim pilgrims hoping to catch a flight to Mecca. The sun was bright orange in the sky and cast brilliant color on the tan colored buildings and sand throughout the city. The turnoff was blocked so all of the cars just started backing up on the freeway so they could take an alternative route
When we arrived at the Canadian Hostel, tables were set up in the lobby of the hostel and free food was being served to people for Ramadan. Apparently, wealthy Egyptians make donations during this time so that those less fortunate can enjoy the breaking of the Ramadan fast each day in style. A few of the guys recognized me from my earlier stay so I was greeted with hugs and big smiles! So nice when you are far away from home. Tonight we are going to spend the evening outside at one of the many sheesha/nargile cafes dotted throughout the city...it is actually breezy and around 70 right now...such a brilliant change from the 45 degrees celsius of my last trip in the middle of summer!
