Arrived in Marseilles after an uneventful train ride from Nimes. While expensive, the trains in France are quite comfortable and timely. A quick but expensive taxi driven by the most polite and charming gentleman encountered in France delivered us to the city center next to the Opera House and to our resting place...the Hotel Relax. Aptly named because you have to relax after going up the many flights of stairs to your minuscule room on the upper floors of the place! We loaded ourselves and our bags into the room and scarcely had room to move...but the A/C worked like a charm. Trade offs, Trade offs!
Stan took us on a walking tour in the afternoon around the old hilly city center. Such a sense of history here, lots of graffiti and character. Lots of North Africans here and other diversity not seen in other parts of our trip. We drove though 'little north Africa' on the way to our hotel and saw Indian stores and other ethnic enclaves. Our dinner later in the evening was in a square that seemed alot like Brooklyn, NYC. Interesting place but unfortunately not enough time to do proper exploring as we left the following am back to Paris. Another time another place....
