Made it out of Istanbul in one piece and arrived in Athens a few hours ago. Took the X95 Airport bus to the Student and Travellers Inn in the Plaka area of Athens right below the Acropolis. Very cute area and am about to set out to explore some more. Only have a couple of days here so I will have to try to squeeze as much in as possible. Considering last year I stayed at the airport hotel Sofitel for the one night I was in Athens, I figure I have already seen more than before!
As an aside, the hamam last night was so crowded we could hardly fit on the center marble slab. The scrub and rub and massage was done with such nonchalance I probably should have just done a self-service clean and scrub. The interior of the room was a light pink with a large central dome punctuated as before with small light holes directing the sun inside. The perimeter was covered mostly in that dreamy milky marble with discolored and stained plaster on the upper portions of the room. The perimeter had these large three washbasin marble rooms in between the usual marble bench and washbasins in the main section. A bit smaller than the other one too. I am cleaner than I have ever been in my life for that I am sure!
