Left Delhi yesterday morning very early and headed West to Jaisalmer via Bikaner the mid-way point. The scenery changed slowly to desert as we headed West. We walked around the old city of Bikaner dodging the usual moving obstacles: people, cycles, autos, bikes, motorbikes, cows...oh and a new one here: camels!
Got on the road early this am and drove through the desert to Jaisalmer which is spectactular. Took a detour to the 'rat temple' outside of town. It was a Hindu Temple clad in marble with hundreds of nasty rats (or as they call them, 'holy' rats) running aound everywhere. You had to see it to believe it...or rather smell it..ugggh). We kept our socks on and now fear having to wash them! Saw a couple recently married outfitted in their finest with elaborate henna designs painted on their hands and feet.
Arrived in Jaisalmer mid-afternoon and took a quick walk around the old town near the fort. The architecture and colors so different from what we saw on our tour in the middle northern part of India. We found a local internet cafe where we hired a guide for tomorrow and will walk soon with our new friend to a local restaurant with excellent and inexpensive thali.
Namaste...
