For those of you who have traversed a Los Angeles freeway during heavy traffic going 80 miles per hour...walking through Venice is almost like that at a much slower pace. You just move with the crowds and let them take you around...meandering and disregarding your map. As you move around, glimpses of water, canals, buildings, churches reveal themselves all around. It's like an architectural maze. I have yet to actually run into any of the churches or museums I paid to see...hopefully someday I will stumble onto one of them! I am saving the Campanile and other sites on San Marco Square for the late afternoon after some of the tour groupies have left!
Today it rained so the smells of Venice have become more acute...salt, sea, garbage, etc. Stumbled onto this little internet cafe and thought I would upload some photos (see previous entry)...
Ciao!
Ok, so I'm back now at the hotel and it is continuing to rain and is very humid. I stopped in at this little sweets bar where you order these perfectly prepared sweets and pastries and have espresso and stand around. It is very quaint. Also ran into a bunch of the museums and churches on my pass that I purchased. They are very STRICT here in Venice, go here, not there, check your bag, no pictures etc. Definately starting to get on my nerves. I snapped a couple of rougue photos of the architecture and view out the windows (w/o flash of course) when the guards turned around. How I long for the days of endless and unsupervised roaming through national treasures and monuments! Did I really complain about it? Probably there is someplace between London/Paris and Venice in terms of appropriate levels of regulation...
I may decide to skip out of Venice early and move on to Florence for a few days...we'll see!
