Where I stayed
So made my way to a hostel..no more of my own space (even if it was in a tiny campervan, it was still lovely), back to good 'ol dorm rooms. My friend, Andy, from Manchester who i worked with..happened to be in Cairns so i booked into the same hostel as him. I bumped into him and we went for a swim in the 'lagoon', across the street from the hostel...a gorgeous pear-shape (or some sort of groovy shape) outdoor swimming pool (level with the ground) literally beside the ocean and the boardwalk amongst a lovely park. It has a gorgeous view and free, how fantastic.
The next day i took a one day tour of the Daintree rainforest, and Cape Tribulation, a national park area along the coast. Saw a few animals (none that i'm completely scared of so that was a bonus, refer to pics). We were lucky enough to see a Cassowary. $700 for anyone who can tell me what that is? It's a big flightless bird, very similar to an ostrich, in the same family but very rare and only in Aus and Papua New Guinea. They have a nice rainbow neck and are very curious creatures. They also have green ants here, i've seen red ants, black ones, brown but not green. Apparently these ones don't bite surprisingly but if you suck on their bum (as the tour guide demonstrated, true story), they taste like lemon and good for vitamin C intake...my excuse as to why i didn't suck on their bum - i don't like lemons!
Took a few nice walks through the tropical rainforest where it's aboot 10 degrees cooler (still humid tho), learned some interesting things aboot all the plants and trees (not that i can remember any of it now) and how they all just try to survive by poking there way up, some clinging to other trees, to see the sunlight and to survive. Then took a nice refreshing dip in the fresh water of the Mossman Gorge (no crocodiles either). It was a nice day, a lot of driving though..and would have enjoyed a wee bit more adventure but relaxing nonetheless.
Back in Cairns, hung oot with Andy that night, reminisced aboot the good 'ol days and had a laugh with him. The next day i was off...a wee bit more north to a smaller, more laid back, quieter town (that's more me). I'll be back to Cairns for a couple days anyways for the festive feeling!
