After Franz Josef, I was going to go to a place called Wanaka, but peer pressure won out again and I didn't want to leave the group who were all going ahead to Queenstown, so off I went. Queenstown is a bit like Whistler, it's a ski resort town, it's stunningly beautiful, and it's the adventure capital of the world.
It's also the home of the first commercial bungy jump in the world, could there be a more fitting place to do it? I had been psyching myself up for some time to do the bungy, for some reason it was the only adrenalin pumping activity that actually scared the crap out of me. It bothered me that it bothered me, so I thought it no better time than to conquer my fear. Queenstown is also the home of a 150 metre (second highest in the world) jump, but you know.... you can't start from the top. You gotta work your way up in life, so I decided to go for the baby one. But it's the original bungy ever... so it's got prestige, man, prestige.
Anyway, we rolled up to the AJ Hackett building, I thought I'd be throwing up on myself at this stage, but I was pretty okay with the whole thing. Once I thought about, it wasn't much different from jumping off a big cliff at Eagle River, or doming the dome, so whats the big deal? I even thought I might volunteer to go first! I didn't get to go first because I was the slowest signing in, but oh well. There were only four of us jumping, Nina went first, did it on the count, no worries. Next up was Clare. She was practically crying and saying she wasn't going to do it. And then she did it. Then it was my turn. I was a tad nervous but I thought... look... there's Clare over
there... crying and moaning and she still did it, you don't have anything to complain about, just get up there and do what you're told. So the guy wrapped up my legs, I waddled out to the edge, he said 'wave to the camera'. I did. 'Wave to the pretty people'. I did. Then he said '1, 2, 3, 4, JUMP'. I did. It was a huge rush upwards, my stomach jumped into my throat, and then the rope caught and it was like a huge release. I did it, woohoo! I got untied
and looked up just in time to see them dunk Rob up to his waist, I congratulated my fellow jumpers and walked up the ramp only to get harassed for apparently jumping too quickly and no one could get photos. In turn, I then got suckered into buying the very expensive photos and dvd for your viewing pleasure!
It was a rush, but to sum up the whole experience, immediately after I did it, I thought 'whats the big deal with bungy anyway?'. I'm glad it's another experience under my belt, but I almost think it's a tad wimpy now... bridges are for wusses... time for a plane, methinks.
