So we rocked up to Dalat, a town in the mountains with a much cooler climate and it was an exciting prospect to be wearing a sweater again.
We spent a day canyoning (rappelling, hiking, swimming and generally navigating your way through an Eagle River-like river), and when we left the town, we rode mountain bikes 80 km to the ocean and a town called Mui Ne where we spent a day or two chilling out.
But our major excitement in the town of Dalat was the day we went downtown to this lake to have a drink. This part of town was specifically called 'The Valley of Love' and we just couldn't resist the idea of taking out these ridiculously tacky and hilarious swan boats they had moored there for a paddle around the lake. As we were renting out our swans, a couple of girls were just coming in and they warned us to 'Watch out, it's actually really hard work!'. We were all thinking 'yeah... right... if you're a total wuss'
So off we went. After the initial hilarity of the situation wore off, it was actually quite pleasant just relaxing in the swan and letting it drift where it felt like. That is, until it was time to head back and we realized that the girls were right! The very stealth current in the lake was stronger than it appeared and we paddled as hard as we possibly could and we weren't getting anywhere!
After a while, we decided... okay.. our only hope is to paddle to the edge of the lake and pull our swan around the edge until we get to the rental place. This was trickier than it sounded, we had to go very carefully as to not fall in the water- not to mention that we had quite the audience of Vietnamese people standing on the bank laughing at the silly tourists pulling along their swan boat. But, it was working okay, we were making progress, until we were almost there and the guy from the rental place just came along and rescued us in his speed boat!!
It was an absolutely hilarious afternoon, well worth the 2 dollars.
