Rafting the white water
Entry 13 of 41 | show all | print this entry |

Another trip that I had booked before leaving Sydney was a day of white water rafting on the Tully River. Mark continued onto Cairns while I stayed on at a place called Mission Beach for a night. Sometimes I forget about the fact that I did this trip at all, but was so much fun.
It was raining that day, which was okay because you were pretty well soaked the entire time. The Tully has grade 5 rapids (big ones), which happened to be rather high at the time due to torrential rains. The forest was also a bit ravaged due to Hurricane Ivan blowing in a few weeks before, but there were yellow flowers out everywhere and I also got to see a wild cassowary- a large emu like bird with huge talons that'll claw you to shreds if you get mouthy. Apparently this was a special treat - our guide had never seen one.
I was in a raft with a couple of Germans, a couple of Danes, and our hot and rather hilarious guide from Tasmania named Elias (who liked to trick you and make up stories and laugh when you fell for them). The whole thing wasn't as fast paced as I had thought but it would be but it was
so much fun - especially when you'd fall out of the raft, which you wouldn't think would be fun, but it was the best part by far. At one point we had to go down this complicated rapid, so Elias says... 'okay.. we could do it the easy way or the cool way, what do you guys want to do?'. Of course we didnt want to be lame and not do the cool way so, 'we gotta turn around.. and put our heads together.. and when I say when... you gotta all lean back real quick....' Suspiciously enough, everyone went careening over backwards into the water except for Elias. Hmm. I think we got had.
Anyway, it was a great day, and I'd recommend trying a bit of white water rafting to any intrepid adventurer.
