Byron Bay and Nimbin
Entry 9 of 41 | show all | print this entry |

My first stop on my trip up the Australian East Coast (the trip which seems to practically be the backpacker in Australia's right of passage), was Byron Bay, a little chilled out hippy town, that has now become rather popular.
I was so nervous about being alone and trying to meet friends, much more so than when I actually got to Australia in the first place. I felt like such a loser my first day or so just wishing that someone would come talk to me. The Irish guy who works there and changes the sheets seemed nice when he came in to change mine on the first day, but I figured he had been there awhile, had his own little clique, and I'd never see him again.
Well I was wrong... the next day, Mark (yes another one) was his name invited me out to the beach to go surfing, and we got on really well. AND I was pro at surfing. I had tried it a couple times out at Bondi, but Byron was much more ideal for the beginner surfer and I had three
good runs and I was stoked on life. Mark introduced me to his friends that night and we all played drinking games and got gooned on goon (the boxes of strong cask wine, around 10$ for 4 litres, usually about 12% alcohol... you can imagine it's the drink of choice for the tight ass backpacker.. if only we had this back home). Things were looking up.
Another day I spent was on a trip to Nimbin, marijuana capital of Australia, where the ganja is aplenty and highly overlooked. We went on this tour called 'Jim's Alternative Tours' where he plays stoner music, tells you stoner stories, and takes you out to his hippy friend's house
to chill out and take it all in. It was all pretty hilarious, until I actually ate some weed and it just knocked me right out. Eat cookies in moderation! Or at least get a good night's sleep beforehand.
Anyway, the rest of my time in Byron was spent hanging out, surfing with Mark and hitting (or slapping, perhaps) the goon.
