Just checking in

Just a quick note to say that I am still in Dahab. The weather was much too hot to travel 8 hours in a bus to Cairo and so we are set to leave in about 2 hours. The past two days have been great. We spent yesterday swimming and sunning ourselves as Friday is the Muslim 'holiday' and everyone was out and about enjoying their day off. Last night was the usual at Tota bar. We ran into the crazy bing-a-bong (that's Arabic for ping pong) man. He's this guy who is addicted to the game and takes it way too serious--but he's hysterical and it's a blast to watch him play. He informed me that he learned to play by watching Forrest Gump (the scene where I believe he's recovering in the hospital from the butt gunshot wound).
I scored a fan yesterday and was so excited about it, only to find when I got home last night that I had no electricity (which happens at any given time at least every other day) with which to enjoy my new fan (sigh). Today was spent out at Baby Fish...a beach spot over by the big expensive resorts i.e. Hilton. It was a great beach with soft sand as opposed to the rocky stuff over here in my hood. Crystal clear water and no jellyfish!! The only er, drawback are the hordes of Russian tourists there. A little note on the Russians--they practically own Sinai. From what I'm told, a while back they began to 'buy' up all of the land in Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada. Okay, the truth is they were laundering money--and loads of it! They built huge resorts and infrastructure while raping the people of any livelihood and destroying the ecosystem and reefs at the same time. They moved in on Dahab a while back but the Egyptian government finally got smart to them and have put restrictions on their acquisition of land here. Regardless, this remains a hot spot for Russians to vacation. In fact, the three main languages here are Arabic, English and Russian. The men run around in their speedos and big hairy bellies hanging out all over the place whilst the women chain smoke with their over-collagened lips saying 'da darling, da da.' It provides great people watching material for me, though, so it's not so bad. I ended up looking after one woman's baby today as she simply left with no regards to her baby who wandered over to a leftover plate of food and began to gnaw on chicken bones. I took the baby into my care until I saw her happily sprinting down the beach in her bikini flirting with a man. Upon retrieving her child she had nothing to say. Oh well. Then Ahmed and his wife (from Wales), Mandy showed up and we all spent the day swimming and eating and just hanging out. It's amazing all the little brown babies with light eyes running around that are of European and Egyptian parents. I think there are just as many of them as there are full Egyptian children in these parts.
Anyways, I've got some good pix and will get them up in a few days when I have time. Off to Cairo now where I'm sure it'll be bloody hot and smoggy but it'll be nice to see something new for a few days.
