Well, reality has finally sunk in that I do eventually have to come back home. I've been putting off making my return reservations for quite some time because I've really been enjoying myself and didn't want to think about it. But today I finally did it. So I'll be back in San Francisco on Wednesday July 23 and then back to Los Gatos maybe the following day or so. And if you do the math, that is just 1 day shy of 4 weeks! I truly can't believe it. Don't get me wrong, I miss you all very much and am very excited to be moving back East for school....but I will be sad to leave behind my life in Tegus.

Life has been busy here in Political. Last week was Round V of the CAFTA negotiations (US-Central American Free Trade Agreement). The goal is to have the negotiations finished and the agreement signed by December 31, 2003. Who knows if it'll actually happen, imagine the difficulty in getting all of the Central American countries to agree to terms with each other and the U.S.!! But it was amazing to be sitting in on negotiations that would shape the future of foreign trade and relations...it was like watching history being made.

I also just had another one of my cables released, so that was exciting. It's great being assigned to the narcotrafficking stuff b/c there is always MORE than enough of that going on :) Long story short, a congressman was caught trafficking illegals and heroin over the border and he's trying to claim immunity. Immunity is a hot subject here b/c every politician has it and uses it to its fullest extent possible. Imagine.

Other than that, we're gearing up for the big July 4th celebration. It's at the Ambassador's mansion on the hill and will include 1200 of Honduras' top politicians and bigwigs...and me, just a lowly intern. So that'll be exciting to see. The next day on the 5th is the "general population" Independence Day celebration at Zamorano (the big agricultural school). So that'll be a fun way to spend my birthday--then a bunch of us will come back to Tegus for a night on the town. It's the BIG 2-5 for me this year!!

Nothing much else going on...just reality sitting in that I'll be leaving soon and trying to figure out what I want to do and see that I haven't already. On the other hand, I'm really excited to start school in September. I got notice that I received university housing-so that's a relief to know I have housing already. I finished scheduling my classes and in general am really looking forward to going back to school. The last step is to try and find some more money to pay for it all!!!
