After finishing up my shift driving (we are switching off every tank of gas which put me at the 1:30-5:00 am shift), John and I stopped at Dennys for breakfast since it was the only thing open. I do not recall going there as an adult without it involving a long night of drinking, but it wasn't bad. If you are ever in Deming, NM and want to meet the entire police force, just sit there long enough.
Speaking of authoritarian figures, I had a funny thing happen around 4:30 am, all the cars were funneled off the interstate under an awning. When it was our turn a guy approached the car and I noticed his shirt said "Border Patrol". I momentarily paniced and thought we took a wrong turn somewhere and were crossing into Mexico (I blame lack of sleep). Of course I started stumbling over my words as he is asking simple questions like are we US citizens and where are we going. I then asked him if we were entering Mexico because that was not my intention. He said no as I kept trying to explain my confusion then quickly stopped talking. He let us go after that, but I realized I would never hold up well to questioning under duress. Sigh! I'm glad it's John's turn to drive.

The border patrol incident is too funny! This travel blog is a great idea and I'm happy you are sharing your travels.

Never try to cross a border with Steve. That is all I can say on that topic. He's worse then you are ;) Enjoy the trip :)

Nice- welcome to New Mexico, show me your papers. I guess this is one of those "we aren't going to racial profile," weare only going to ask for papers if we pull them over for some other reason, like a checkpoint for everyone on the interstate. Thank goodness you are not brown!

That happened to me when I was on the 10 in Texas. I thought, uh oh, what have I done? I guess I looked innocent enough though because the border patrol guys waved me through after glancing in my messy car...
