Our group stayed overnight with a Laos family close to the Vietnamese border. The village only had one small street and we were treated like celebrities when we arrived, the children following us down the street like the Pied Piper. The family was very welcoming and although the accommodation was very simple they did everything to make our stay a memorable experience. Laos is the most bombed country in the world as the Ho Chi Minh Trail runs through it, the resourcefulness of the people is evident from the boat trip we were taken on. The boats have been made out of the empty fuel tanks of B52 Bombers that were dumped from the planes following their bombing raids.
We were all surprised at night just how much noise a small village can make, mainly the unidentifiable insect life! It started with a cicada in our room that screamed like a child when the house owner tried to chase it from the room with a broom, then the geckos, frogs and cockerels and finally sleep was abandoned at 4.30 am when the babies woke up and started crying.
