After a 4.30am start and a crazy dash to Salvador Airport, arriving only 30mins before the plane took off, we all flew down to Rio. Our hotel is in the Copacabanna area and I can“t get the Barry Manalow song out of my head since I arrived, it is driving me crazy.
The city is absolutely stunning and rightly has the reputation as being one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We took a city tour and firstly headed to Sugar Loaf Mountain, taking a cable car to the top. The views were unbelievable, the city spreads out between spectacular mountains and golden beaches, Sugar Loaf was a great place to appreciate how big the city is. Our next stop was Corcovado, the huge statue of Christ the Redeemer. When we arrived the statue was shrouded in cloud but as the wind blew the statue was revealed, it was quite magical. We also took an trolly car, like the ones in San Francisco up to an old part of town and walked down the hill watching the sun set 01 Mr Tingle Hits Rio

. From there you could see the huge contrast between the rich and the poor, it may places the areas are next to each other, “heaven and hell“ just a street apart.
On the taxi back to the hotel I saw the full moon over Sugar Loaf mountain and Copacabana beach, it was a beautiful image.
Rio is such a vibrant city and a great place to people watch, it seems that no matter what size or body shape you are there is a bikini to fit you, or “man skin“for the guys (the name adopted on the trip for those terrible speedo style swimming trunks!) The one negative thing is due to the fact that they seem to love little “toy“dogs you have to watch where you are standing, especially when you are wearing flip flops - not a good feeling. And talking of flip-flops half the population live in “Havaianas“, the brand of choice for flip flops in Brazil, apparently they sell in Harrods for 20 pounds and more and are very fashionable, here they cost about 2 pounds, I am thinking of ditching all my clothes and filling my backpack with them and make a fortune on e-bay!!
