Our trip to Parque National Canaima began at the small airport in Cuidad Bolivar, we had to split up the group to take the houre flight as each plane only held 5 persons. The planes looked really old and it was a little disconcerting to see the pilot reading his newspaper as we were flying. The scenery was spectacular (a word I seem to be using quite alot but it is the most appropriate) We got our first sight of the Tepuy from the air (these are flat table top mountains that are very old and have their own unique eco-systems and plants on each one) The largest of these Tepuy is Auyan Tepuy which contains Angel Falls (Salto Angel)
We then took a motorised canoe up the river Carroo, every twist and turn of the river revealed beautiful new sights and views, it is difficult to describe how stunning it was. Our boat driver was excellent, negotiating through rapids, it being especially difficult as the river was very low, if it had been much lower I doubt we would have been able to make the journey. On the way we stopped at a beautiful small waterfall to have lunch and swim, whilst brightly coloured butterflys danced around us.
Our first view of Angel Falls took your breath away, it is 3 times the height of the Empire State building and mesmerising to look at.
Our campsite had what must be one of the best views in the world, directly opposite the falls on the banks of the river. That night we ate roasted chicken that had been cooked on an open fire, and slept in hammocks, I had a fantastic nights sleep and then woke to the view of the falls being revealed from the morning mist - a magical experience. We were lucky to be able to see all of the falls as due to its height it is often shrouded in clouds.
