Words really cannot describe how amazing last night was, and photographs and videos still can’t quite capture how Beijing saw in the New Year. Truly awesome.
We admired the views from Gina’s apartment, enjoyed food and drink, and were treated to a fireworks show for several hours, we were already impressed and you could see fireworks for miles into the distance. Then it got to midnight, wow wow wow…….. some of you know that Andy doesn’t say wow easily, and of all the incredible things we’ve done here, the Great Wall got a wow, until last night, the fireworks got a big wow too! It was one of those goose bump moments that you will never forget
It really didn’t matter where you let them off to our amazement, street corners, in the middle of the road – yes really, cars were driving around the massive boxes of gunpowder, the streets were unusually quiet but still enough traffic around to have to dodge the displays!! Even police cars with their lights on, were seen driving around them!! You think about the regulations in the UK but here, anything goes!! No-one paid to go to a big display, everyone paid for their own (cheap, for example for a strip of firecrackers it costs £1) and the residents of Beijing put on this amazing display, forget Sydney, forget London, this was by far the best we have ever seen. According to some, it was quieter than usual, many people listened to the advice around not letting off so many because of the pollution worries……
During the evening a few of us went outside for a walk, now from the 18th floor it was noisy, but on ground level, it was truly deafening!!! The sounds went right through you, and our ears were ringing for sometime! After midnight, we went to Paddy’s bar for a few drinks, wandering through the streets that were full of debris, and on the walk home at 3am, cleaners were everywhere sweeping it all up. We have 2 weeks of this, at the moment it’s a novelty, ask us in a few days we may change our mind, already at 4pm in the daylight, we can hear them all around us! You'll be able to get the idea of the sound of it from the video clips below!!
One of those unforgettable evenings, where we felt privileged to be in Beijing, and be part of the Chinese New Year celebrations, witnessing such an event.
