Friday consisted of another frustrating Mandarin lesson, a warm up of a  few phrases but no explanation to what they meant, then firing questions back to answer - errr..... how can I do that when you haven't told us what the sentence means?! Later in the class, I got a bit lost & told the tutor that I was sorry, I didn't understand, he just kept repeating it to me without slowing down or explaining it, and I just sat there feeling really really stupid. Andy didn't have a great time either & there were points where we felt like walking out. We perservered but not sure how much we will get out of it going back next week.

On coming back to the office, Joy said it's very much a cultural difference, and the didactic style of tell tell tell repeat repeat repeat structure is normal. Having researched it a bit on line, I found several articles comparing styles & explaining just this, also students must be 'scared' of the teacher so that they are respected, Confucious' fault apparantley.....! Also got talking to a guy last night who works with Chinese students to prepare them to go onto Uni in other countries, mainly America & to be ready for the teaching style, which I can quite understand now.

Plans changed a little last night, Ray decided to come to the first event with us as it was the Australian Chamber 'Kooka' drinks which they hold once a month, and he hadn't been for ages. It was held at the Kerry Hotel which is a beautiful Shangri-La hotel, on the rooftop terrace. We got there early so had drinks in the hotel bar called Centro, a really cool trendy bar. We headed up to the event & Ray knew soooo many people! Great as we got introduced to lots of people again, and caught up with some friends we also knew. Ray won the raffle, a lovely necklace (not his thing!!) so he gave it to me! A great night, and we ended up staying there rather than going on to the other event.

Lorraine, you commented on the last blog about the energy needed to be nice to people all the time at these things, and you're right!! It does get tiring and there is a time limit on them too!!!

Today, Ray invited us to the Beijing International Cricket Sixes which was a great day. He & Gilt Edge are one of the sponsors, there were about 16 teams, including our A team, the Gilt Edge Cavaliers and the B Team, the Gilt Edge Vagabonds, who have never won a game yet - they kept up that tradition today too!! Surrounded by lots of Ray's Aussie friends from Sydney (a few of them from the Police force too), and lots of beer (Victoria Beer, nice) flowing all day it was lively let's say!! Came away with a T shirt & baseball cap as well, bonus.

On a sober note, we heard that Steve our boss, his Dad died yesterday - really feel for him, but he & his Mum were with him, and at least he had a few weeks in the UK with him at the end.

Back home now, don't feel too great - think I overheated today, it was back to 32 degrees, sunny and blue skies having rained ALL week. Andy has popped out for a drink with our mate Ali, as we haven't seen him for a couple of weeks.

I believe we're missing the Goodwood Festival of Speed, been going for years so will have to miss out this year! And thank you Aunty Sal for your e-mail, and your offer to give Jenson my love ;)

Hope you have a good weekend guys,
