Where I stayed
Tuti & Eileen's Place!
Our first stop was Isla Morada. We visited the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park - all under water of course, so we opted for the boat & snorkel tour out to the reef. The sea was a little rough - fortunately Steve and I quite enjoyed the boat ride...but I'm not sure the same could be said for all on board - there were some very green faces! This made the snorkeling a little more challenging, but fun nevertheless!
The reef is the third largest barrier coral reef in the world, which meant we got to see plenty of animals, including brightly coloured 'nemo' like fish & jellyfish! We were in the water for about an hour & a half!
We hung out with our hosts for the evening & had an early start planned the next morning to head down to Key West
The drive itself to Key West was by far one of the most enjoyable on our roadtrip so far! Surrounded by sea & sunshine, there were people fishing, swimming & boating. We drove over the 7 mile bridge to reach our destination. In places the Keys were as wide as the road we were driving on which made for a fantastic laid back drive...far too easy to lose concentration on the driving itself!!
Key West still has the 'local' feel, despite being descended upon by hundreds of tourists during the winter months! We enjoyed the day, wandering around, passing random chickens and visiting the tourist 'hot spots' as well as trying to find a more remote location from which we could see the sunset. We of course had to visit the end of Interstate 1 from which we had begun our journey in Miami, as well as the Southernmost Point in the Continental USA & enjoyed some locally produced frozen custard!
We opted for the Fort Zachary Taylor state park which seemed far less busy with tourists than the famous 'Southernmost Point'! We sat and enjoyed the warm evening, before heading back into the hustle & bustle of the centre.
We headed back to Isla Morada, however the drive back not quite so enjoyable in the dark!
