On route, we stopped at Caesar's Head State Park for a walk. It was a cold, but sunny day, beautiful weather for walking! We took the Raven's Cliff Head route to a waterfall. It was beautiful! We didn't pass a single person, an advantage travelling at this time of year! After a 2 hour walk, we were back on the road, bound for Charleston.
We arrived in Charleston around 7pm and by 8:30pm we were sat in one of the local bars near Lester's place enjoyed nothing less than a pitcher of PBR (for the English folks reading...this would compare to fizzy water with literally a 'dash' of alcohol!), refreshing nonetheless!
We also ate in true Southern style - everything that arrived at our table was covered in batter
On Thursday we got up & headed to downtown Charleston. WOW! It was so beautiful! We walked around the city, mainly the historic district, stared at the most beautiful houses & read about their role and history within Charleston. We even wandered down some very narrow streets....you dont see them very often in the US!
We headed over to Patriot's Point to enjoy the views & take a look at USS Yorktown - quite impressive! That afternoon we headed to Caw Caw State Park - a swamp effectively! Fortunately, the aligators are still asleep at this time of year, so we didn't encounter any of those! Phew!
That evening we completely overindulged at an 'All you can eat' buffet Lester took us to, obviously we tried to get our 'moneys worth'!! As we where unable to move Lester chose to explain what downtown Charleston is like on a Thursday night. Apparently the ratio of 8 women to every man is infamous and lead him to explain that 'Hoochy Mamas' (Essentially women with very few clothes on whatever the weather!!) maybe out in force!!
On Friday we headed to Botany Bay Plantation....which was one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen in my life! You literally go from swamp, marsh land to sea in seconds! There are even trees on the beach! Truly an amazing sight! The weather was warm, so we found a fallen tree (the roots swept away by the sea & sand) and sat by it, enjoying the views & weather & relaxed!
That evening after enjoying Lester's home cooked beer chicken & homemade crab cakes (which were extremely tasty!) we just had to visit a bar Lester frequents - the Gas Station Bar! Literally - as the title implies.... a gas station that is now a bar. It looks barely recognisable as a bar - you would still be inclined to pull your car up on the forecourt! Every bottle or can of beer is either $1 or $2, that is taken from the chillers that look like they remained there from the once operating gas station! True genius! And no Hoochy Mama's in sight!!
After enjoying a couple of beers, Lester took us through the 24hr Krispy Kreme drive-through! That's right! A drive through for Krispy Kreme doughnuts 24 hours a day! Steve was a little excited - he has a lot of love for Krispy Kreme's! (Marlon, you really would appreciate it too!)
Saturday morning, we went to breakfast with Lester, his house mate Brad and Brad's friend Clint before heading onto Savannah, GA!
