We actually left Doha on the 25th in the evening for an uneventful flight into Colombo and was picked up by Myzan, a driver from our home for the next seven weeks in Arugam Bay, The Galaxy Lounge. We then spent the next 7 hours driving cross country.

The family slept most of the way but I had the front seat and got to watch the entire harrowing journey. Myzan was fine, but everything that you can imagine coming into the road in a third world country came out to get in our way:dogs, goats, elephants, cats, cars, bikes, cycles, buses, walkers, cows, cows sleeping in the middle of the road, toddlers, crippled old men, crippled old women, crippled old cows sleeping in the middle of the road. There is really no way to explain, but I can tell you having taken many journeys like this, it was the craziest....and unbefrikinlievably, Julie did not puke. Sleeping obviously helps.

We only got stopped once by the police, which Myzan said was pretty good, and since it was my fault for not wearing a seat belt, what can I say. Seat belt -- That's funny.

Myzan had stopped on his way out of Colombo to pray at the mosque. If I did not know this was a typical time for morning prayers for Muslims , I might have taken it for a bad omen. I used the time to go ahead and get my stomach acquainted to new germs with some street food: a sticky bun with jam, well some kind of jam substitute.

We got to the Galaxy Lounge around 2 pm, met our friends, the Luci (Lucases) and our landlord's representative, Prian, better known as P. Then into the hammock.

Julie and Seth took a late afternoon walk up the beach to Mambo's -- more on that later, and came back with all kinds of plans. Plans, what is this? Next thing you know, they will develop some three ring binder.

I'm glad you posted a map. I had no idea where Sri Lanka is. I know that makes you squirm. Visions of you "playing a fun game" of putting a world map on the floor behind you and us picking some remote country and you turning around and pointing to it in less than 2 seconds flat are coming to me!! This is obviously not a shared gene.
