Next, in search of a nice waterfall, I began hiking along the Falls Nature Trail. What the park officials fail to tell you however is the view from this particular trail is quite poor and if you would just drive to another parking lot and make the very ,very short walk to the falls (via another "trail"), the view will be much better. So, I was trapped on a walkway, unable to see anything except all the people who hadn't hiked at all but were being rewarded by the better view.
After about 5 miles of hiking, I headed back to basecamp in Martinsburg. Tomorrow it's off to Hershey, PA to see what happens when a city is nuts for chocolate.
After a day being trapped in my Martinsburg , WV hotel I finally got my rental car this morning and was free to explore. I headed north up I-81, thru Hagerstown, and into Cotoctin Mountain Park. Since traveling usually means a little too much Cracker Barrel and McDonald's, I figured a hike would be best for my first day of auto-induced freedom. I do a lot of hiking, but today was my first solo-hike. I started by hiking to the top of Chimney Rock, a short 2.2 mile (RT) hike, that culminates with a nice few of the mountains. There was no one on the trail and I was looking forward to some moments of silence and reflection at the top. However, a couple that I can only assume waits at the top behind a tree successfully ruined the silence. I have no idea where this couple came from, but after 2 minutes of peace, they wandered onto the rocks, stood in front of me, and acted like idiots. I gave up and headed back down hoping to have better luck with Trail #2.
