I went to the National Museum and Ethnological Museum in the Addis
Ababa University Campus. Those places aren't too bad. I saw the plaster
moldings of Lucy which were quite impressive. But other than that,
there isn't much to see here and so I'm very glad that today is my last
day. National Museum costed 10 birr and the Ethnological Museum costed
20 birr.
I've been eating Injera everyday and it's getting tiresome. However,
the other types of food here are very inexpensive, so pizza and
hamburgers are excellent options. I had a hamburger and it was a
bargain for 16 birr or a little under $2.
I sent the 22 postcards I wrote at the post office and it's always very
strange to get patted down and checked my metal detector every single
time I go to any government building. I guess that's how the USA is as
well, so I'm not surprised. But machine guns are a bit more common
here. In fact, in certain areas in the south, an AK-47 is part of a
dowry in addition to 30 cows... People steal cows so the cattle herders
have to fend them off by shooting them!!! $200 gets you an AK-47...
I talked with some travelers at the hotel and the issue of security
came up and everyone seemed to have stories of getting robbed or
something stolen. There doesn't seem to be anything you can really do
except travel in groups of 2 or more. The whole village or town is
involved and the police are paid off so there isn't anything you can
do....
I'll go into more details on these stories once I'm not paying an arm
and leg for internet... I also have only 40 birr left and I need to get
to the airport!!!
