Los Angeles
Entry 9 of 23 | show all | print this entry |
Long wait Los Angeles International Airport - usually called by its three-letter code, LAX - is the third busiest airport in the world, but as I learned - extremely inefficient. It was a long flight from Auckland all across the Pacific to Los Angeles, and having to wait over an hour just to get to the first checkpoint while watching the staff work as slowly as possible is not the best first impression America can give.
Place to stay Anyway, when we finally got through we found a payphone in order to find a place to stay. But before we had dialled the first number a guy stepped up to us and asked if we needed a hostel. It seemed alright and he even provided us with free transport from the airport directly to the hostel.
Hollywood Blvd The hostel was part of the USA Hostels chain and was situated right next to Hollywood Blvd, and that was the first place we had a look around too, of course. We walked by the famous sights of Mann's Chinese Theatre where we met Batman, Marilyn Monroe and Yoda outside. While reading names stepping on those famous bronze stars we found lots of weird stores and saw many people seeking stardom walking around these streets.
Pretty Woman The next day we signed up at the hostel for a walking tour of the area. Speaking at headset volume, we could hardly hear a word the guide was saying but we managed to catch the hotel where "Pretty Woman" had been filmed.
After that we had quite a long walk up the hills where the famous Hollywood sign is. We couldn't get very close to the sign itself, but got a view of city from the top. From there you understand how polluted this city is as you can only see a few hundred meters into the smog.
Stand-up comedians Later that night there was a stand-up comedian night at the hostel. Young hopefuls entertained us as best they could even though some of the Australians gave them a hard time. Rikard and I had a good time anyway, and the beer was only a dollar.
The same night I met this person who offered us a trip to Las Vegas and Grand Canyon which suited us perfectly. We thought it was a bit expensive at first, but after checking prices in my travel guide it wasn't that bad at all. So, enough of the city of angels for this time - time to gamble!
