Hello world, this is Tony writing from Cancun. I wonīt attempt to match the amount of detail that Clare has provided in her latest entry from that unpronouncable place that starts with ĻOĻ, but hopefully I still have something of interest to say.
I flew into Cancun from Mexico City yesterday morning. When the taxi driver in Mexico City found out that I am from Australia, he produced a soft platypus and an Australian flag, which he placed on the dashboard for the duration of the journey, then gave me a couple of Mexican ornaments at the airport which he refused to accept money for. Nice guy!
The flight itself revealed several very impressive snow-capped volcanoes, all of which seemed to rise to a higher altitude than the aircraft, but then suddenly we were plunged into a tropical storm (it has a name, but I canīt remember it), and some of the roughest monsoonal weather I have ever seen. My plan upon arrival in Cancun had been to go to the beach. Instead, I was dodging rain squalls and wandering up to my shins through flooded streets. Today is a little better, but the wind, cloud-cover and humidity are remiscent of being at home at the wettest time of the year. Fortunately the accommodation is excellent, and the local food is cheap and very healthy.
I have a few trips planned for the next week, including a day of diving the Gulf of Mexico as soon as the waether fines up, and hopefully a 2-day trip to Merida and the Mayan ruins of Chichinitza. All going well, I will be able to link up with Clare on her bus tour while I am in Merida. Then we both overnight here in Cancun on the 27th before ignoring the US government embargo and heading into Cuba.
In three weeks I will be home! Where has the time gone? Best wishes.
Tony
