. After settling in we walked up the beach and then over a rocky outcrop, rather than a flat road, to try to get back to Saladin town (where we got off the ferry.) The scenery and sunsets were beautiful. Check the photo!. We bumped into Johanna's friend Frederic, who would soon become our friend, and arranged to meet up a day or so later. We also went to the dive shop www.lantadiver.com to check prices. We got all the info we needed then were asked if we were asthmatic. This crushed Sarah as she was desperate to scuba dive. I wasn't that bothered but its what she wants to do. It meant that we couldnt go diving together utill checked out by a doc (and not a Thai one that can be bribed). The next few days were spent relaxing and learning the art of Poi. Imagine a chain with a ball on the end being slung around at high speed in all directions, and then you'll understand poi. I was taught by Frederic and Johanna, but to be honest i wasnt that good. But once you got the hang of it.....We did poi again on the 27th of October. Within 3 hours i'd got the hang of it and had upgraded to using FIRE POI
. Slinging burning bits of cotton around my head and entertaining the crowds (well 6 people) at the Funky Fish(the bar we frequented). We also had the pleasure of meeting some other swede's, Daniel and Marcus, brothers who were divemasters. It was them, plus Johanna, Sarah, Frederic, and practically anyone else who was around to go and learn to dive. So far on Koh Lanta so bloody good.
So we decided to go to Koh Lanta. The lonely planet didnt rate the place much, so that would hopefully mean that there wouldnt be a great deal of people there. We went with Johanna and Stuart to get the ferry across, and also met Warren, one of the guys who was out with us in Krabi. Stu got off halfway to go to Koh Jum, whilst the rest of us went on to Koh Lanta. When we got off the ferry it was bedlam. "You want room? Special price?", there were around 50 people with brochures and photo albums wanting us to stay at their resort. We decided to sit this out and had a drink and bite to eat at a nearby cafe. When the swell had died down the touts then came and hovered around us, like vultures waiting for a meal to drop dead. We thought bugger it and got a taxi to a resort we had heard about. We ended up staying at Palm Beach resort in a bamboo hut, with a bed and en-suite cold shower. It was great for 200bhat a night. While they got the rooms ready we went to the beach. Me, Sarah, Johanna, and Warren were the only 4 people as far as the eye could see. The water was warm and the sands beautiful
