30th july 2005

we were on the boat at 7.45 in the morning nursing a little hangover, but if anything cured us it was the sight of the sperm whales. Amazing creatures and bloody big. We managed to see 4 (well 3 and one of them made a re-appearance) and watched them resting on the top of the water before diving back down into the deep. This was the spectacle we wanted to see with the whales breaching the water with their til before diving below. Amazing. We even had a few Albatross as well fly by. After the trip we drove to get lunch at Nimms Bin, a roadside caravan that has been selling crayfish (or lobster whatever you want to call it) from there since the late 70's. We got one and had it for lunch. Flash packers indeed. We then made our way on the trek towards Nelson and onto Abel Tasman national park. At Nelson we stopped off but alas it seemed that the whole place shuts down at 4pm, not a soul around so we moved on. At motueka we thought we'd go and see a film and went to the smallest cinema that i think we have seen. One screen, packed out for each sitting, and very good! Looks as though all the elderly people from Hamner Springs followed us across here and all went to watch Lavender Ladies as the cinema was full of them when their film finished. We saw War of the Worlds and then moved on. We got to the Abel tasman late on and camped for the night.
