T was up at the scrake this morning to see the sunrise over the sea in the wee bay.  He assured Sara it was spectacular, she peeped out the van window and agreed wholeheartedly before snuggling back down.  After brekkie we sat beside the pristine white sandy beach and then walked up the cliffs to the memorial to the Rainbow Warrior.  There were great views all around and the sea below was turquoise, green and blue and you could see the coral which would be brilliant to snorkel around.

Onwards on our drive up north.  We drove for about an hour through outstanding scenery then stopped at a quiet wee town, Mangonui, where we walked around a bit then had a hearty lunch of freshly caught fish with chips at a little restaurant overlooking the sea.  Sara of course had a couple of mussels and a glass of NZ's finest savi, yummy!  After stuffing ourselves stupid we drove on about an hour and a half up towards Cape Reinga, stopping off for a little detour to check out 90 mile beach (which is actually closer to 90km and is not the longest beach in NZ - we'll be visiting that later).  It looked really pretty but we agreed we couldn't be bothered with a trip down the whole length of it on a bus (we're not insured to drive on it) and that it would get a bit samey after the first few miles.  So on to Waitiki Landing where we settled in for the night.

90 mile beach
Don was saying that he was on that beach and the bus wasn't able to stop very often for fear of getting bogged down in the sand. Apparently a lot of other buses can be seen using it, although I'm not sure if that's a tourist thing or if the locals use it too.
