Had a fantastic day in the bay today. Up early and into Paihia to get our catamaran. The good thing about winter is that there are not many tourists about so it was just us and nine other people on the boat. We headed across to Russell first which looked like a nice place with lots of pretty wooden houses on the beach. Then almost immediately we spotted dolphins! Got our wetsuits, snorkels and flippers on and jumped into a boom net at the side of the boat. The weather was fantastic so it was a heart-stopping shock to find the sea totally freezing. Think we got too used to nice warm lagoons in Mo'orea. As we snorkeled we saw huge dolphins underneath us (had no idea they were so big) and arching on top of the water in front of us. It was an amazing sight and such a fantastic experience that we both want to do it again as soon as possible, preferably somewhere warmer though.
Back on the boat we sailed on around the beautiful Bay of Islands checked out huge caves, sailed through the hole in the rock and were shipwrecked for lunch on a gorgeous beach. After lunch we hiked up the hills on the island and discovered another secluded beach. When we were picked up again we found delicious freshly caught NZ green lipped mussels waiting for us and we dipped them in soy sauce and vinegar - absolutely scrumptious.
It was a brilliant day in a beautiful part of NZ. Back on dry land we headed on to another great camping spot - Matauri Bay. More thumbnails ...
