Journeys on the salty ...... salt?

After a short and salty nights sleep it was up at 4.30am to see the sunrise on the salt flats. We saw some amazing reflections in the pools of water as the sun rose and the area we went to was so much more impressive than that we'd driven through the day before. It was a truly magical place with the salt lake stretching out for miles and shining in the morning sun. Drove on to Fisherman's Island - a small island covered in cacti, including one 1203 years old. There was a great view of the flats from the hill and it really showed the full extent of them and how desolate and remote the area is. After brekkie we had fun taking silly pics on the by now blindingly white salt flats until we were called back like kids by Valerio so we could drive on.
He took us to the very middle of the flats where we were surrounded by 12500km2 of salt lake and more importantly where we had another opportunity for more silly pics. On we went to see the original salt hotel then the salt mines. We were pretty salted out by this time and left the salt flats but the next stop was quite bizarre - a train cemetery. Not sure why a load of rusty old trains is considered a tourist attraction but there mustn´t have been enough salty things to fill the day.
In Uyuni we said goodbye to the Ozzies (they were great craic and have given us tons of tips for travelling in Oz) and had a wander around the wee town till it was time for Valerio to take us to our accommodation for that night. Another long bumpy journey with an exciting stop in the pitch black night in the arsehole of nowhere where Valerio and his mate got out to work on the jeep for a while. Luckily it was ok in 20mins or so and we continued on to another cold Refugio where after a hearty dinner of instant soup and instant potatoes Valerio made our night by telling us that we'd need to be up for 3.30am the next morning, ahhhhhhh!!!!
We thought we were hard done by but when we were chatting to him we found out that he does the 4 day trip continuously throughout the year without a break and only gets to see his wife and kids for about an hour every 4 days or so. He has 15 days holidays each year. Something to remember when we get back home and start complaining about our jobs. More thumbnails ...
