Journey to the Salt Hotel

Valerio the rascal didn´t appear to wake us up as he'd promised and T was still feeling really bad. We all got up and T decided to continue with the tour as we were going to be descending and he didn't want the rest of the group to miss out. If he went to the hospital then everyone had to go.
Anyway we went to our first stop of the day, the stone tree, which is just a pile of rocks in the desert. We were both exhausted and perhaps not as easily impressed as usual. Then followed very rocky, bumpy and dangerous tracks to visit a serious of Altiplano lagoons. They were all beautiful and so still that they reflected the mountains and sky perfectly. After lunch it was on to Volcan Ollage which is still active but luckily no eruptions that day. The scenery was spectacular and the rocky hills and mountains were made up of many different wonderful colours.
It was a long drive through the desert, the southern part of Salar Uyuni and over rough bone shattering tracks (giving everyone dead bum syndrome) to the salt hotel. Garry (T's bro-in-law) had warned us this was not going to be as glamorous as it sounds but it was heaven compared to the freezing Refugio we'd been in the night before. This was not the original salt hotel but was only 3 years old and built on the banks of the Salar for environmental reasons. Everything there was made from blocks of salt - beds, tables, chairs - and it had warm showers which were very welcome after all the time in the jeep. More thumbnails ...
