Left the fabulous Antarctic hostel (one of the best in Argentina) and took a flight to Puerto Montt in Chile. We have decided not to stay in Chile though as we have heard from every backpacker that we've talked to about it that it is just too expensive and not as good as Argentina. Unfortunately it was too late to cancel the flight so weŽd be stuck there for a day or two until we could catch a bus to Bariloche in the Argentine Lake District.
Met a few people from the Antarctic ship at the airport and one of them, Adrian a girl from the US, was also going to Puerto Montt and even staying in Casa Perla, the hostel we'd booked. Nice to have a bit of company, especially as the town doesn't sound too exciting. The plane was quite small and it was a rather bumpy journey and not really for the nervous flyer. There were however fantastic views of the Beagle Channel and the mountains and glaciers below. We even saw the top of a volcano peeping out through the clouds.
After a long change-over in Punta Arenas with high security checks just in case anybody had an apple or any other dangerous Argentine fruit and veg in their bag, we flew to Puerto Montt, met up with Adrian again and made our way to the hostel. As we were greated by cute little Constanza the owners daughter we realised that it was more someones home than a hostel but as we were only there for a night or two it didn't really matter.
As we wandered around the town with Adrian the next morning we quickly realised that Puerto Montt is not a place we'd like to stay longer in. The town is just a typical south American town but with absolutely nothing of interest for visitors. We got ourselves organised with money, bus tickets, lunch and shopping then hot footed it back to the hostel. We eventually got to use the kitchen (when the lady running the place had finished baking in it and the man who owns the place had had his dinner) and we ate quickly and chatted with Adrian, mostly about how nice it would be to get out of Puerto Montt and into warmer accomodation.
Needless to say the three of us were up at the scrake the next morning all packed and ready to get the hey out of there.
