A time to chill

The major attraction in the southern side of Los Glaciers National Park is the Perito Moreno glacier. We took a trip from our hostel in El Calafate and drove through valleys and forests and past the beautiful Lago Argentina to get there. We then hiked for an hour along the edge of the lake, stopping for increasingly impressive and close-up views of the enormous glacier. 5 km wide, 20km long and 60m high it is made even more amazing by the fact that it is constantly shedding huge chunks of ice into the lake below. This was fantastic to watch and we could hear the ice crack and each drop was followed by a thunderous roar. We sat at the viewing gallery for about an hour watching the monstrosity flex its furious ice muscles then took a catamaran trip to see the glacier from the lake. It gave a different perspective and we could really appreciate how high it was. It got a little scary when the gargantuan and deadly icy shards crashed into the water beside us and we missed death by a mere 300meters.
For some reason we were totally knackered from this pensioner style trip and we cancelled the 12 hour glacier extravaganza trip we´d booked for the next day. Think it's time for a rest. We´re a bit shattered from all the hardcore trekking in El Chalten and we've decided to have a couple of days rest before heading to Ushuaia at the end of the earth.

Love the glacier falling. Am hoping to see Fox's Glacier in New Zealand, should I ever get there. Yes, it's not just a mint, it's a glacier too apparently!
