06h: wake up. 06h30: small breakkie. 07h: first dive. Yesterday, we got a briefing on the Minke whales. What the f... are Minke whales? I had no idea. They are dwarf whales, showing up here (outer, northern Barrier Reef) during July and August. Nobody knows where they come from or where they are going afterwards. Dwarf means 6 to 8 meters for a whale. They are playful and never attacked a diver, so far.
We are going down. I struggle a bit with my sinuses. Of course, I lied about my cold and the antibiotics. They would not have let me dive. I go down more slowly than usual. I hear screaming. Who is screaming? Oh, it is Dr T (at 15 meter deep). What is he screaming about? He points at me. Something with my equipment? I quickly do a body check. Weight belt, BCD, fins, air, regulator, spare, mask, it is all there and working, what are you screaming about? Left, right, below, above, all clear. What, what, what? Oh, behind me. A WHALE. Less the 5 meters behind me. I had to include the picture but by the time Hubby got my attention and adjusted his camera, he was too far away. Checking out the snorkelers.
Three more dives to do. After every dive, Jo prepares something to eat. You cannot get hungry on this boat. Hubby is still sick.
So: what else do we see?
The most poisoned sea snake in the world, which is, on top of that: cuddly!!!! His teeth are not strong enough to bite through human skin but I still jump a mile when it swims on to me.
The Mantis shrimp. The one we saw was about 20cm long. It is the strongest and fasted specimen in his kind. With one hit, it breaks through almost any aquarium. If it wants to attack, the human eye is too slow to see it.
Sharks, jelly fish almost our size but they do not sting, nudibranchs (of course), my favorite box fish, ... .
Check out the pictures!
We are exhausted in the evening. Certainly because Dr T is sick in between. Sleeping pill for him and hope he will be able to fall asleep before he gets sick.
We signed up for a ... dawn dive, would you believe? Wake up call at 05h, quick coffee and diving at 05h30!!!! Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffff!
