... commonly known as the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, is a popular tourist attraction near Port Louis, Mauritius, and the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere. The garden was first constructed by Pierre Poivre in 1770, and covers an area of around 37 hectares. While the garden is most famous for its giant water lilies, the garden features spices, ebonies, sugar canes as well as 85 varieties of palms from Central America, Asia, Africa and the islands around the Indian Ocean. Many trees have been planted by world leaders and royalty, including Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, Indira Gandhi, François Mitterrand, ... .
Of course, our 'lonely planet' lies once again: it is not for free. But almost. Less than half a Euro. And it is right on the following: it IS worth the visit AND take a guide, which costs you a bit more than a Euro a person for an hour.
The tour was great. The guide did not only give us a lot of info but also answered all our questions. Do you speak a lot of languages? S.cks for you: the tours are normally in 2 languages: enjoy hearing the same thing twice. Still: go there AND take the guide!!!!
Yes, yes, I heard it twice, so I could explain all the pictures, but you do not want me to, do you?
We were with a group of Germans, of which one said: 'Oh, there are more Germans on the island. I thought we were the only one's: I assumed the rest were Bavarians'. This one still believed in Das Deutsche Reich. (Sorry, Michie). We hear German everywhere!!!
We drove home afterwards. It is only 100 kms. So, I thought 1 hour. It took us 2,5 hours.
Not nice if you need a bathroom. Oh, you say, stop at a pub or bar. Well, that means, you have never been in Mauritius.
Just in time, we reached home.
To have a sandwich and a murder mystery on our laptop.
BUT: we have to inquire for accommodation for the Seychelles. The life of a world traveler is not easy.
